The National Championships were started in November of 1998 by Sydney Academy with the enthusiastic cooperation of the Manitoba Speech and Debate Association, the Nova Scotia Debating Society, the Quebec Student Debating Association and a number of schools in Ontario and Saskatchewan.
Since 1998, the Championships have become recognized as the top competition in the country, and have been hosted by schools around the country.
