Debating champ crowned

There’s no arguing it, Halifax high school student Innessa Colaiacovo is Nova Scotia’s top debater.

The Halifax Grammar School student was also a member of the winning debate team at this year’s Nova Scotia Impromptu Debating Championships, held this past weekend in Dartmouth.

Rounding out the winning team from Halifax Grammar was Vinayak Mishra.

Innessa defeated Shalini Rao of Sacred Heart School of Halifax to take the individual title, while the Halifax Grammar team topped the defending champions from Sacred Heart 3-0.

Innessa and runner-up Shalini will represent the province at the 2008 Canwest National Public Speaking Tournament, held in Winnipeg in February.

Innessa will also join Andrew Morrison of Sacred Heart, John Lazovskis of Sydney Academy and Anna Wedlock of Middleton Regional High School for the National Student Debating Seminar in British Columbia in November.

In other matters, tryouts for the Nova Scotia debating team, which will head to the Team Canada qualifying tournament next month, were held in Halifax on Sunday. Deirdre Casey of Sacred Heart, Daniel Lewis of Halifax Grammar and Maureen MacIsaac of Sydney Academy were all awarded spots on the provincial team.
